I reviewed public short-research archives and recurring feeds on September 4, 2026. The good ones served very different jobs: forensic idea generation, securities-finance context, primary-source casework, and systematic event testing.

This shortlist required a visible archive, recent public activity, dated reports, clear position disclosure where the publisher trades the names, and enough evidence to trace a claim. I did not rank anyone by returns, hit rate, screenshots, or the size of a famous winner.

Alphanume publishes this guide and appears below. Our entry is a first-party description, and the links to our own research and data products create an obvious commercial affiliation. Every activist short source also has its own conflict because it may benefit if readers agree.

These sources are research publications or opt-in research feeds rather than copy-trade services. That distinction is useful. Event traders need evidence they can place on a timeline, while a recommendation without the underlying documents is hard to test and harder to size.

Muddy Waters for forensic casework

Muddy Waters Research maintains a dated public archive of company-specific reports and follow-ups. The archive was active in 2026 when I checked it, and individual reports identify the issuer and thesis directly.

The research job here is forensic. A report may connect accounting treatment, counterparties, corporate filings, customer claims, governance, or on-the-ground diligence into one company thesis. That can give an event trader a map of which documents and disclosures deserve independent review.

  • Save the report publication timestamp and the first executable quote after release.
  • Read the full legal and position disclosure attached to that specific report.
  • Pull the cited filings and source documents yourself rather than treating excerpts as the dataset.
  • Keep the issuer response and later corrections beside the original thesis.

A polished allegation is still an allegation. Separate verifiable facts, analytical interpretation, and claims that depend on unavailable evidence before measuring a price response.

Spruce Point for report structure and updates

Spruce Point Capital's research archive showed current long and short reports across sectors as of the review date. The archive exposes publication dates, tickers, position direction, and report links, which makes it easier to build a point-in-time event file.

Spruce Point is useful when you want to study how a long-form thesis is assembled and updated. Reports can provide candidate variables such as acquisition quality, accounting changes, customer concentration, governance, margins, or capital allocation.

The list includes long calls too, so filter position direction explicitly. Preserve revisions as separate events. Replacing an old report with its current version can leak information into a historical study, especially when a rebuttal or follow-up changed the claim.

S3 Partners for the crowded side of the trade

S3 Partners Research focuses on securities finance, short interest, borrow conditions, crowding, and portfolio context. Its public methodology work distinguishes short-interest scale from short interest relative to float and discusses financing rates and utilization.

That layer matters after an event thesis looks attractive. A short can be directionally right and still fail through unavailable borrow, a fee spike, forced buy-in, or a crowded exit. The research question changes from whether the company is weak to whether the position can survive long enough.

  • Position size: compare proposed exposure with actual borrow availability and ordinary trading volume.
  • Carry: record the fee available at entry and its full path, not the latest displayed rate.
  • Crowding: distinguish dollars short, percent of float, utilization, and concentration.
  • Exit: model recall, buy-in, squeeze gaps, and the inability to cover at a convenient close.

Do not join an activist publisher's mailing list expecting a complete borrow dataset. The publication timestamp identifies a possible information event. The securities-finance layer answers a different question: whether shares could have been borrowed, at what cost, and under what recall risk. Joining those records after the fact is one of the easiest ways to turn a plausible thesis into an impossible backtest.

A useful join uses the report's first public timestamp, the security identifier valid on that date, and the first borrow observation a trader could actually have received. Keep missing observations as unknown. Filling them with today's status assumes the difficult part of the trade away.

  1. Capture the release. Save the report, disclosure, timestamp, delivery channel, and first market observation after publication.
  2. Extract atomic claims. Give each accounting, governance, financing, or operating claim its own row and primary source.
  3. Record the conflict. Note the publisher's disclosed position, commercial product, and ability to change exposure.
  4. Build the counter-file. Collect issuer responses, amendments, auditor statements, regulator actions, and factual corrections.
  5. Define tradability. Attach price, volume, spread, borrow availability, fee, and locate timestamp before calculating returns.
  6. Freeze the outcome. Choose an executable entry, horizon, benchmark, and exit policy before opening the chart.

What earns a subscription

Run the protocol on three old reports before adding another email to your inbox. One should look right in hindsight, one should be disputed, and one should have produced a violent adverse move. You are testing research usability rather than the publisher's ability to choose a flattering example.

Keep the feed that helps you find primary evidence faster, reject weak theses earlier, or model implementation more honestly. A source that only makes you feel bearish is expensive entertainment.
