The best alternative may be an addition. A live level tool can guide an intraday decision while a separate historical dataset tests whether the idea worked across prior regimes. Combining them is sensible as long as each timestamp and methodology is documented.

Moontower is the broad volatility-intelligence alternative

Moontower's official platform page describes implied-volatility surfaces across strikes and expiries, skew, term structure, earnings-volatility history, volatility risk premia, dealer-positioning measures, scanners, portfolios, reports, and an AI agent with cited data. It presents the product as a cross-sectional options workflow rather than only an intraday index-level service.

That makes Moontower a plausible fit for an equity analyst, volatility researcher, or desk comparing many names around earnings. Its public page also distinguishes individual, team, and enterprise capabilities, including API or MCP access at some levels.

The difference from SpotGamma is emphasis. SpotGamma's public story centers live flow, hedging impact, and actionable levels. Moontower's centers the volatility surface, cross-sectional screening, portfolios, and workflow automation. Verify the exact dataset history and entitlement needed for your test before treating either as a research database.

ORATS is the data and backtesting alternative

ORATS API documentation describes REST access to live, delayed, historical end-of-day, and intraday options data. The current documentation lists historical end-of-day data back to 2007, historical one-minute data back to 2020, scanning, precomputed backtest search, custom intraday backtesting, and time-and-sales endpoints.

ORATS is the more natural comparison when the requirement is a repeatable study. Researchers can ask for chains, derived fields, or backtest results through structured endpoints. Its public intraday backtester documentation also exposes parameters such as entry time, exit time, delta targets, holding period, commissions, and strategy legs.

That structure does not remove model risk. You still need to inspect quote selection, slippage, corporate actions, symbol history, survivorship rules, and the number of strategies searched. ORATS is not presented here as a substitute for SpotGamma's commentary or live level interpretation.

Alphanume fits the point-in-time research job

Alphanume is relevant when the question involves a dated feature that must be reconstructed exactly as known. The catalog includes research-ready market and event datasets, including the IV Rank dataset, IV versus historical-volatility premium dataset, and SPX 0DTE Strike Band.

The distinction is important. Alphanume is not a live dealer-level dashboard and should not be described as one. It is a source of point-in-time inputs for testing, monitoring, and automation. Run a seven-day evaluation before switching
  1. Write the decision the product must support, including instrument and horizon.
  2. List the raw inputs and derived indicators required for that decision.
  3. Record when each value becomes available and how often it updates.

Ask for a field dictionary and a sample export before committing. A chart may display a useful level without exposing the inputs needed to reproduce it. An API may return historical values without the exact version that appeared live. If the research process needs revision-safe history, make that requirement explicit.

Licensing belongs on the same sheet. Confirm whether data may be stored, shared inside a team, used in derived research, or displayed to clients. Also record support response time and the procedure for correcting a bad value. These operational details matter once a dashboard becomes a production dependency.

Finally, distinguish observation from action. A discretionary trader may only need a fast visual and a daily note. A systematic desk may need machine-readable values, stable definitions, revision history, and a service-level expectation. The prettier interface is irrelevant if the required output must still be copied by hand each morning.

Score every requirement as necessary, useful, or irrelevant. A product that wins on twenty optional features can still fail because one necessary field is unavailable at the required timestamp. Keep notes on what the official page confirms, what support confirms, and what the trial actually demonstrates.

The practical verdict

Choose SpotGamma when live options-flow interpretation, SPX levels, and intraday hedging context are the central job. Choose Moontower when cross-sectional volatility intelligence, earnings, portfolio views, and workflow tools matter more. Choose ORATS when structured options history, APIs, scanners, and configurable backtests are primary. Choose Alphanume when point-in-time event and market features are the research input.

No option is universally best, and none of these public pages establishes trading performance. The decisive test is whether the product exposes the data, timestamps, assumptions, and delivery method your process requires.
